Private lessons are not required, but are strongly encouraged due to their obvious value to the
student and his/her musical growth. It is the student's responsibility to take private lessons if at
all possible. In high school we do not have section lessons as in junior high. Attention to details
particular to your instrument, such as alternate fingerings, trills, tuning, tone production,
vibrato, etc., cannot be effectively addressed in a large ensemble. A private instructor can guide
students considering "step-up" instrument purchases and mouthpieces to address your needs as you
grow physically and develop embouchure muscles. The quality of the school band program therefore is
reliant on the musical growth of its members. In fact, the need for individual instruction/tutorage/mentoring
is even greater as a student advances. In any fine musical organization, the majority of students
study privately. A list of recommended instructors is available from the director.
We have an incredible private teaching staff right on campus. These private teachers have been
rigorously checked out by the School District and are Teacher Aide Certified so that they may teach
on campus. Getting these teachers on campus requires having enough interest to provide them enough
students to warrant their time at Central. Lessons are typically during part of Lunch or curricular
band class. Information concerning specific teachers and lesson availability can be obtained from
the Band Directors. The school district sets the private teacher fee and collects it, in advance,
one quarter at a time. The district, in turn, pays the private teachers that we have "on staff."
Please fill out and return the Lesson
Form to the Band Director at the start of each quarter.
