CONGRATULATIONS TO LYNNE NOLAN FOR BEING NAMED THE 2012 OUTSTANDING ADMINISTRATOR BY THE ILLINOIS MUSIC EDUCATOR ASSOCIATION!!

Lynne Nolan, Dean of Student Activities received the 2012 Outstanding Administrator Award from the Illinois Music Educator Association (IMEA) at the IMEA All-State Conference in Peoria last week. The award recognizes excellence in encouragement and promotion of music education in Illinois.

In a recent Naperville Sun article, Ms. Nolan stated: “I don't do this job for recognition, so it was very humbling to receive this award. We are blessed in District 203 to have parents who are supportive, kids who love what they are doing, and directors who have a vision of what music can be in Naperville. They make it a pleasure to be an administrator here.”

Congratulations, Mrs. Nolan, and thank you for all your time and tireless efforts on behalf of the NCHS Band Program!

2011-12 BBA BAND BOOSTER ASSOCIATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS OPENINGS

In addition to raising funds for the NCHS Band Program, band parents provide refreshments at concerts; assist the marching band with equipment, props and uniforms at competitions, home football games and parades; organize and assist with potluck dinners and picnics, organize and staff the NCHS Marching Classic at Benedictine University, Jazz Cafe, Drumshow, the NCHS Solo & Ensemble Extravaganza, and other special events. Band Booster Association volunteers also produce a quarterly newsletter; design and maintain the band's website; and notify local media of band activities and achievements. These parent volunteers are essential for the success of the band program.

The following Board positions are open for the 2012-2013 school year and beyond. Many current BBA board members are parents of seniors who will be graduating at the end of the school year. We are hoping to fill these positions while our experienced board members are here to help make a smooth transition.

Newsletter Coordinator: Responsibilities include producing four newsletters per year. Information is provided by BBA Directors, the band website and BBA board members. Internet access and knowledge of desktop publishing is a must.

Special Events Chairperson(s) (1-2 people): Responsible for organizing various “special events” that occur throughout the year, such as the Municipal Band Gazebo Bake Sale in the summer, Jazz Café, Judge's Hospitality at the Marching Classic in the fall and Solo & Ensemble in the spring. If you like to plan parties, this is a great position for you!

Hospitality Coordinators: Responsible for organizing refreshments for band awards night, Evening With The Humanities, and other events hosted at NCHS.

Concessions Committee (1-4 people): Responsible for organizing the operation of the indoor concession stand staffed by the band parent and student volunteers from Thanksgiving through the end of basketball season (first week of March) -- approximately 40 event dates. ("Veteran" volunteers are here to guide you!)

If you have any questions about any of these positions, or would like to become involved in truly making a difference in the band programs at NCHS, please contact BBA President, Paul DeKruiff or BBA Volunteer Coordinator, Michelle Wolfe

FUNDRAISING AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES!

Please note: In order to ensure we have adequate funding for the band programs, each band family is expected to participate in three fundraising volunteer commitments per extra-curricular band involvement per season. Below are some opportunities that fulfill this requirement. Please note that all of these events will be posted on the Volunteer Calendar as soon as they are scheduled:

Car Washes will be scheduled during late spring and summer. All band students and parents are encouraged to come out and help! This is a great way for incoming freshmen to meet other band members!

Ribfest and Last Fling. Volunteers will be needed to work various shifts, including Logistics, Courtesy Security, Parking and the Beer Tent. These great events benefit both the NCHS Band Program and the Naperville community!

Market Day: Volunteers (students and/or adults) are needed one day per month from approximately 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to help unload, sort and fill orders. Pickup dates are posted on the Volunteer Calendar.

Bears Home Games. Fifteen adult volunteers are needed for each home Chicago Bears game to wipe tables in the indoor club levels at Soldier Field. This is light work, transportation to and from Soldier Field is provided, and volunteers are given a meal ticket. Additionally, each adult can earn $25 toward their student's band student account for each Bears game shift they work! The Bears home schedule is shown on the Volunteer Calendar. Please email Margaret Donahue to sign up!

Naperville Central Marching Classic. Held at the beautiful campus of Benedictine University in Lisle in the fall of each year. On October 6, 2012, we will host our sixth marching band competition which will feature some of the best high school marching bands in the State of Illinois! Many volunteers are needed for this very important event. Please email Michelle Wolfe to sign up.

Concessions: The Band Boosters operate the indoor concession stand during the winter sports season (mid-November through the end of basketball season). Volunteers (parents and students) are needed to staff each event listed on the Volunteer Calendar. This is light work and a very important piece of the fundraising needed to help support the band program.

In addition to the above, there are also other fundraisers such as Ad Book sales (summer/fall) and poinsettia plant sales (late fall) that are great fundraisers but do not fulfill the fundraising volunteer requirements.

If you have any questions regarding volunteerism, please contact Margaret Donahue or Michelle Wolfe. Please direct any questions or suggestions relating to fundraising to Paul Sweeney.

BAND STUDENT ACCOUNTS

Every NCHS band student and Spirit Color Guard member has a "student account," which is funded by the student's (or his/her family's) participation in certain limited fundraising opportunities provided by the Band Boosters, such as Program Book Ad Sales, volunteering for Bears game shifts at Soldier Field (adults only), and poinsettia sales.

Student account funds can be used to pay for music-related expenses such as: private music lessons; instrument purchases and repairs; music camps, including NCHS band camp; and band trips. (For trips such as the Disney trip, student account funds may be used to pay your balance at the end of the payment schedule but may not be used to secure the initial deposit for a trip ).

Each student's band account carries over from year to year, and can be passed down to siblings; however, at the end of a family's tenure at NCHS, if there is a balance left in their student account, it will be deposited into the BBA's general fund.

To check the balance of your student account, please send an email to the Student Accounts Coordinator, Kathy Moran. To access funds from your student account, you must fill out a Student Account Payment Request Form and submit it to Mrs. Padmanabhan in the Band Office.

If you have any questions regarding student accounts, please contact BBA President, Paul DeKruiff .
