Flute
Jan Frank earned her Masters Degree in Music from the University of Illinois in
Urbana-Champaign.She also earned her Bachelor of Science in Music from the University of Illinois. She
has studied privately with such flute greats as Hobart Grimes, Jack Fonville, Mary Louise Poor and
Charles DeLaney, and has taken Master's Classes with James Galway, Jeanne Baxtresser and Carol
Wincenc.
Jan has been employed full time as a music instructor for the LaGrange-Highlands School District,
and now maintains a large private studio in her home in addition to teaching at both Naperville
Central and Naperville North High Schools since 1997. She is a judge for other area high school
band auditions, IHSA high school and junior high solo and ensemble contests.
As director of the flute choir for Grace Methodist Church in Naperville, Jan Frank has conducted
large group performances that include the full family of flutes, including piccolo, C flutes, alto
flutes and bass flute. She is also experienced at playing the double bass flute and the contrabass
flute.
Ms. Frank plays flute professionally for the Ranelagh Gardens Woodwind Quintet, (formerly the Prairie
Winds). As a free-lance musician she plays weddings, holidays, musicals, receptions, church jobs
and funerals. She is a soloist with harpists Barry Riskedal and Nancy Dunagan. She plays
flute for the West Suburban Symphony Orchestra, and subs for the DuPage Symphony and other area
orchestras. She has been a soloist with the Shrine Orchestra in Chicago, the LaGrange Highlands
Orchestra, and the West Suburban Symphony. She has belonged to such well-known groups as the
University of Illinois Large Symphonic Band, the Naperville Municipal Band, the North Central
College Orchestra, Benedictine University Orchestra, the Wheaton Municipal Band and the Lisle City
Band.
Jan has had extensive study in current technomusicology, computerized music and recording techniques. Her
students have the option of using the SmartMusic computerized educational tool in her home studio
for performance accompaniment, recitals and for recording their own CDs.
Professional organizations to which Jan belongs include the National Flute Association, the Chicago
Flute Club, and Mu Phi Epsilon Music Fraternity. She attends the National Flute Association
Convention annually and remains current in extended flute techniques and new performance ideas.
Jan Frank invites her students to perform in two large flute recitals annually, usually in December
and May. Many of her students have continued with careers in music as performers, music educators
and music business professionals.
